27 May War Weekend: Each year on May Bank Holiday the East Lancashire Railway plays host to a weekend of activities around the WWII theme. For anyone who hasn’t seen the event before it is quite a spectacle, with ‘troops’ camping on the village green in Irwell Vale, authentic troop vehicles being driven around the village, and people dressed in period costumes of the 1940′s. Even Winston Churchill has put in a special appearance! The event is carried the full length of the ELR line with events also in Rawtenstall, Ramsbottom and Bury. In the past there has been a flypast of a Lancaster and Spitfire. This Friday marks the start of a weekend of activities and a good opportunity for some photographs with a difference as we take an evening walk around the village and, for a few, down memory lane.
