Wishing you a Happy and Healthy New Year for 2012
13 Jan An Explanation of Inks and Colour in Printing:
By Gordon Jenkins of Chorley.
27 Jan Annual General Meeting and Syllabus Night:
Please submit your suggestions for the club’s syllabus for the coming months
10 Feb * L&CPU Folio: Nature and Illustrative Prints
24 Feb Preparing Digital Images for Projection: By George Steele CPAGB. LRPS. This presentation will cover such tasks as sharpening, re-sizing, re-shaping, creating borders, etc. using Photoshop so that your digital images can be shown at their best. George is, by reputation, an excellent teacher and over the coming months we are hoping to arrange a series of talks by him on different topics – all helping us to get the most from our photos.
09 Mar Portrait night: Mark Watson will be explaining the use of studio flash to help us get the best from our portraits. Bring along your camera and a tripod if you have one. If you are using an SLR, bring whatever lenses you own.
23 Mar Frank’s Night: A digital presentation of Frank’s images with group discussion.
NB: This is only a 1 week gap between meetings to allow for Good Friday. After 30 March, meetings will continue on a fortnightly basis, the next meeting being Friday 13 April.
30 Mar Head and Shoulders Portrait Night: A further evening of portraiture with two lighting set ups. An opportunity to put into practice and refine what was learned in the first session with individual help for those who request it. Please bring cameras, tripods and where possible medium telephoto zoom lenses. The evening is principally aimed at owners of DSLR cameras but bring whatever camera you use. You do not need to have been present at the earlier session to take part. At a future meeting we will project and discuss members’ images from the two portrait sessions. If you are new to photography and need help with your camera’s controls, please also bring your instruction book. We will try to help where we can.
11 May Digital viewing of images taken by ‘The Beyond Group’ Following several excellent practical sessions over the last few weeks, tonight we will take a look at photos taken by members of The Beyond Group. We will be viewing digital images on screen so please join us for a sit down with a cuppa and some lively debate on the ‘likes’ and ‘dislikes’ of a variety of images.
25 May Evening Walk: Our club is situated in such a beautiful area, it would be a pity not to make the most of the lighter evenings. We will meet at the church hall at 7:30pm (prompt please for an early get-away!). Wear stout footwear, clothing appropriate to the weather, and don’t forget your camera and any lenses you might need. If your main camera is a compact ‘point and shoot’ they’re great for close-ups!
Our syllabus for 2012 is based on suggestions and discussions put forward by members at our AGM in January. We will have a full programme of events with a strong emphasis on learning through both instruction/tutorials and practical sessions. As they say … watch this space!
06 July An Evening of Filters: Weather permitting we will be holding a practical session outside looking at all possible types of filters i.e. Polarising, Gradual Density, etc. If the weather is wet again then we shall be indoors so fingers crossed for a good night! Programme for this evening changed owing to bad weather
20 July An Evening of Filters: Weather permitting (again!) we will be holding a practical session outside looking at all possible types of filters i.e. Polarising, Gradual Density, etc. If the weather is wet again then we shall be indoors, so fingers crossed for a good night! This session has been cancelled twice previously so let’s hope it will be a case of ‘third time lucky!’
03 Aug Sharpening in Photoshop: George Steele We are pleased to welcome back George Steele for another evening of tuition using Photoshop. George has kindly offered to give us a demonstration on the subject of ‘Sharpening’ and we understand this is quite an in-depth topic. More to it than meets the eye!
17 Aug Outdoor/Indoor Portraits using camera flash: We will be having an outdoor portrait session (weather permitting) or indoor if it proves inclement. The emphasis will be on using the on-camera flash and/or off-camera flashgun – without the studio lights normally associated with portraits – techniques we can use in our own home for family portraits. Please bring your camera and any flashgun you own. A tripod might prove useful but we can always share.
31 Aug Photo Critique Evening: Please bring along up to 6 of your best recent images for screen viewing. For those members who went on the club trip to Brimham Rocks and Fountains Abbey recently, perhaps you took some nice shots you would like to show? If not, other recent images will do nicely.
Please bring them along on a disc or data stick set to a resolution to 1400 x 1050. This means they show at their best when viewed on the screen.
14 Sept A Practical Portrait Evening: Bring your camera and any lenses
28 Sept Night and Low Light Photography: A Questions and Answers session hosted by Mark Watson prior to our trip to Salford Quays on 6 October.
Take a look at our following page for information on 2 club outings relating to this topic:
http://irwellvalephotographyclub.org/outings/
12 Oct A further lesson in developing members’ knowledge on how to use the club’s studio flash: Please bring your cameras; your 70-200mm lenses or/and your 85mm, 105mm, 150mm, 180mm, 200mm lenses if you have these. I understand that there is to be some canine photography at the end.
26 Oct A Digital Projection Night of Members’ Images: We shall be evaluating the shots that members have taken on the flash night a fortnight ago, and the Salford Quays/Media City outings (for those members who attended). Please would members bring a selection of shots, both good and not so good, for discussion and possibly help with suggestions for improvement. (As a guide we suggest a maximum of 10 images)
Please bring them along on a disc or data stick set to a resolution of 1400 x 1050. This means they show at their best when viewed on the screen.
09 Nov Photoshop Instructional Masterclass: George Steele is back again with his latest ‘how to’. This time on HDR techniques (High Dynamic Range). If your idea of HDR is over-exagerated colours/contrasts and over-sharpened images then you haven’t seen it done correctly. Come along and see how it should be done! With our thanks to George for agreeing to come back again.
23 Nov Andy Latham: A Photographic Journey Along The River Ribble, from Source to Sea. Andy is a well respected, professional landscape photographer in Lancashire and we are delighted to welcome him to our club for his first visit. Here’s the link to Andy’s website if you would like to take a look at his work:
